Province of Moravia

Province of Moravia

The Province of Moravia consists of three dioceses:

Olomouc archdiocese

The Diocese of Olomouc was founded in 1063 by Pope Alexander II as a result of its separation from the Prague archdiocese. Pope Pius VI promoted the diocese to an archdiocese by a papal bull on 5th December 1777.

The area of the diocese is 10,088 sq km where live a total of 1,376,000 inhabitants. Out of them 570,000 are Roman-Catholic, making it the largest diocese in the Czech Republic. The diocese is divided into 22 deaneries. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Wenceslaus and he is also the patron saint of the diocese.

Brno diocese

The Diocese of Brno was founded by the bull of Pope Pius VI on 5th December 1777. The area of the diocese is 10,597 sq km with 1,354,000 inhabitants. Out of them 533,000 are Roman-Catholic. The diocese is divided into 20 deaneries. The cathedral is dedicated to Ss. Peter and Paul, these are also the patron saints of the diocese.

Auxiliary bishop: Msgr. Petr Esterka (He lives in America and was entitled with the pastoral care of Czech Catholics living abroad.)

Ostrava-Opava diocese

The Diocese of Ostrava and Opava was founded by the bull of Pope John Paul II on 30th May 1996. The area of the diocese is 6,273 sq km and there live 1,315,000 inhabitants. Out of them 420,000 are Roman-Catholic. The diocese is divided into 11 deaneries. The main cathedral of the diocese is the Divine Saviour in Ostrava and the co-cathedral is the Assumption of Virgin Mary in Opava. The patron saint of the diocese is St. Hedvica of Silesia.
